More icons and how to make your own

I think I completed all the icons for the current built in applications of nemo. Here they are.

iconset

There are three types of icons in this iconset. The first, and preferred one, if you can manage to do it, is to find an object representative of your app that is circular, like the dialer, or the combination locker. It doesn’t have to be absolutely circular, some parts can stick out of the circle and actually this practice is recommended.

The second type of icons are objects that are not circular but can be easily recognized even if modified to a circular shape, like the sticky notes, or the packages. This can be done by either cropping or reshaping the object.

The third solution, least recommended but always easy to do, is to just paste any icon over a colored circle. This is actually recommended for logos of established brands/apps who do not allow their logos to be modified. The circle has a radial gradient from the center to the rim, with the lighter part at the center and maximum difference in lightness between rim and center at about 50.

Here is the calendar icon in svg to base your own icons on it. You will need the open sans font

  1. Icons look nice! I have some feedback:

    – Phone icon reminded me to a ladybug, and not an actual phone. Perhaps a green circle with a phone icon in it would be better, or maybe it’d be enough to change colors.
    – People icon is nice, though a bit unusual. :)
    – Chat icon looks cool, but the characters inside it make it look like as if it was swearing (in English comics, they usually indicate swear words by random special characters)
    – Surf icon is nice too, but I’d change the green color of the continents to something that looks more alive.
    – Clock icon looks like a checkmark, maybe you could set the clock arms apart or put a circle in the middle
    – Videos icon reminds me of a microchip
    – Documents icon is not very documenty and is too similar to the plain text editor icon

    My personal favourites are:
    – Email
    – Photos
    – Music
    – Packages
    – Files
    – IRC :)

    Those are the brilliant!

I have thought something to make this a bit better, let me try it. The green circle with phone is overused. Let’s be different. It’s not that the user will be eternally confused with that.

I’m not very happy with that icon, but I don’t want to use the same ball-headed figure once more. Maybe I’ll think of something

Yeah! :) I’m a big comicbook fan and I did that on purpose, for humoristic reasons.

      Will do.

      > – Clock icon looks like a checkmark, maybe you could set the clock arms apart or put a circle in the middle
      I’ll add a seconds hand

      > – Videos icon reminds me of a microchip
Hmm… I never thought of that.

It’s a bit more wordprocessorly I admit, I might try to think of something

really? I thought it was the worst of the bunch
      > – Packages

That’s an almost direct rip-off from symbian, but I like it too
      > – IRC :)
      That’s my favorite too.

  2. I tried some changes with the clock and dialer icons. The dialer is now better but I think the clock lost it’s simplicity and elegance. I think that if we do the clock update live with the current time we will not have the “checkmark” problem anyway.

    alternative clock/dialer icons

  3. i prefer the clock icon with the seconds too …

Also my brain have a problem with the settings icon. that can’t works. the small toothed wheel is too small :p
